Everyone loves to receive gifts!

And it is also great fun to give gifts.

From time to time we love to give gifts to members of GoodStoryADay. It is a great way for us to say, we really care about you.

I caught this good habit of giving gifts from my mom when I was very young. Every now and then, my mom would declare a gift day. This was for no special reason, just because she felt like expressing her love for her children and family by giving gifts. They were not always big gifts or even medium sized gifts. They were gifts from the heart. They had value because of the thought they expressed, which was love.

We kids caught the spirit of it and would scramble around the house trying to find something to make, or do, or present that we could somehow wrap up as a present and give to someone we loved. Sometimes my sister and I would put a ribbon around us and as our parents would untie the ribbon we would sing a duet we had written for them. Somehow, they always loved it.

Ah, what a delight it was!

I guess that is the reason I love giving so much. It is seeing the light in a person’s eyes when the present is received. It is the warmth of goodness that comes over you. Well, it is just good to give.

And a long time ago when I was a teacher, I would declare suddenly, “Today is Gift Day!” Even the students who were not too interested in school would come alive. In my English classes the students would write poems, or stories, or skits to give to one another. And you know what? They liked doing it so much that they always behaved extra-good on gift days.

When I entered the business world of publishing, I again found ways to give gifts to my clients. I like to give bonuses whenever I can to go along with things people buy from me or services I provide them. It is a neat way of doing business, I think and so do my clients. Sometimes the bonuses are much more valuable than the item that is purchased, But, that is not the point, it’s the thought.
