Book-a-Month

A book is an open doorway to the mind and the world . . . fun, excitement, suspense, adventure, love, romance, and drama. Just add your imagination!

I can remember the pleasures I received each night as my mother read to my sister and me. Oh, how I lived for that time when the three of us would cuddle up together and enter the world of Charles Dickens, Robert Frost, Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson, and that of my all-time favorite . . . Heidi.

The Old Man and the Sea, though totally different, comes a close second. Lassie Come Home was a favorite because I grew up with a wonderful Collie dog, just like Lassie, and I lived on a farm.

I had a reading problem and didn't really learn to read until I was in the 6th grade! But my mother and sister read to me all the time. Even when my sister was a very little girl, she could read as well as my mother. She could pronounce all the difficult words and make words flow together just right. Reading came easy to her, but not to me! I was so glad that I could listen to the words and the stories they told. It was so exciting, warm, and comforting to be read to.

When I grew up and had children of my own, one of our favorite activities was reading together. Now that my children are grown, you know what? We still read aloud to one another when we are together. There is just something about the closeness with one another, the anticipation of how the story will unfold, and what the next page will bring!

Reading a good book is nearly like living a second life each month, as one book is completed and another one is begun.

I like reading several books at once, but I always select one book for a month's read in which I read just a chapter or a few pages a night. The book becomes like a delicious, anticipated treat, a special delicacy for me and my family.

I do hope reading with your family is as much fun as it is with my family. The reading-together habit grows on you and soon you will hardly be able to wait until reading time arrives each day.

I have selected books for the GoodStoryADay Book-a-Month that I feel everyone in your family will love. You will get a chapter or a few pages a night, so the story will last for the entire month. These books will also be new books that I believe no one in your family has read before. How fun for me to share these treasured books with you and your family!

We will begin the first one on Early 2007. Be expecting it, and invite your entire family to share in the reading of it. I'll be reading it with you. Oh, what great fun it will be!
